Cascara Sagrada Bark (Rhamnus purshiana) – Cascara or American buckthorn is a “sacred bark” that has long been used by traditional herbalists to improve bowel function and regularity. Dried cascara bark has laxative properties.

The active substance that has a laxative effect on the intestines is anthraquinone, contained in cascara bark. Bowel movement occurs 8-10 hours after taking cascara. Both traditional and scientific medicine use cascara as a laxative.
Under the influence of digestive enzymes, anthraquinone is destroyed to form emodin and chrysaphanic acid, which stimulates irritation of mucosal receptors and increases colon motility, while the mucous membrane of the rest of the intestine is not irritated. Thus, Cascara Sagrada is a mild laxative.
