    Histidine

    Histidine

    The essential alpha-amino acid histidine is one of the 20 amino acids involved in protein biosynthesis. However, it is not completely synthesized in the body, which causes the need for additional intake. It promotes not only the growth of tissues but also their recovery.

    As an important participant in the formation of carnosine, it contributes to the improvement of the performance and endurance of the body. Histidine helps to support the immune system, and also helps to ensure that our body is less exposed to the harmful effects of stress and depression.

    Histidine is found in significant amounts in hemoglobin, an important iron-containing protein that provides oxygen to tissues.

    The essential amino acid called histidine is not synthesized in the body, so its deficiency must be filled with food or the consumption of special supplements containing it. Natural sources of histidine are pork, poultry, beef, cheese, tuna, salmon, wheat germ, soybeans, peanuts, and lentils.

    According to the WHO, the average daily rate of histidine that a person should receive is 12 mg per 1 kg of weight, and this figure applies primarily to ordinary people since the needs of an athlete certainly exceed the needs of an ordinary person.

    Histidine is the main substance that stimulates tissue and muscle growth, accelerates the healing of wounds, injuries, and cuts, and has a positive effect on joints and cartilage. This amino acid prevents the development of arthritis, inflammation of the joints, and spine.

    It is also a precursor to histamine, one of the most important amino acids that promote tissue repair and growth, is part of a variety of enzymes, supports the absorption of certain minerals (zinc), and prevents the absorption of copper.

    Histidine is a powerful antioxidant

    Among the antioxidants, histidine is considered one of the most powerful, as it copes even with those free radicals that are not up to the teeth of vitamins C and E. Moreover, it is part of the myelin sheaths surrounding nerve cells and is also involved in the formation of red and white blood cells. Histidine prevents the harmful effects of radiation and helps to remove heavy metals from the body.

    One of the main advantages of this amino acid is its excellent bioavailability since the main part of it is easily absorbed by the body.

    The effect of histidine:

    • Participates in the formation of hemoglobin;
    • Affects the metabolism of prostaglandins;
    • Reduces the risk of thrombosis;
    • Participates in the synthesis of the powerful antioxidant called carnosine;
    • Improves the absorption of zinc and iron;
    • Participates in the regulation of sleep and wakefulness processes;
    • Prevents the accumulation of heavy metals in tissues;
    • Improves the condition of people with rheumatoid arthritis;
    • Stimulates sexual desire;
    • Normalizes the function of the gastrointestinal tract.
