This substance is a polysaccharide. It consists of the following molecules:

    • glucose
    • maltose
    • maltotriose
    • dextrin

It is extracted by the method of fermented starch splitting. In the majority of cases, the starch is taken from corn, as well as from potatoes and rice. The packaging may contain information about syrup or maltodextrin.

In general, it looks like a white or cream powder. It is perfectly soluble in water at any temperature.

The main feature is an extremely high glycemic index, which is even higher than one of ordinary sugar. Depending on the method of manufacture, it can range from 105-136 units. This is due to the fact that starch passes through the gastrointestinal tract and enters the bloodstream much faster than sugar.

Maltodextrin in sports nutrition Maltodextrin picture

Manufacturers of sports nutrition add maltodextrin almost everywhere. This is due to the properties of the substance:

    • It changes the viscosity.
    • It emulsifies and thickens the mixture.
    • It suspends the process of color change.
    • It helps to adjust the density of the substance.
    • It increases caloric content.
    • It increases solubility.
    • It improves uniformity.
    • It acts as an excellent conductor for dyes, vitamins, flavorings.
    • It reduces the hygroscopicity of bulk products.

In terms of chemistry, maltodextrin is not some sugar, which allows manufacturers to label it "Sugar-free". In addition, it is a cheap way to increase the caloric content, while improving the main parameters: solubility, hygroscopicity, uniformity, and even taste.

    Maltodextrin in weight gainers

The use of maltodextrin in sports nutrition in general, and in gainers in particular, is justified by its main property. Since the gainer is a mixture of protein and carbohydrates and is used for weight gain, which must be consumed immediately after training, then a large caloric content and a high glycemic index become true benefits. Fast carbohydrates will cause a surge of insulin and saturate the muscles with the necessary energy. However, it should be understood that weight gainers that contain maltodextrin are categorically not suitable for people with diabetes.

It is important to understand that molasses can act as the main component of the composition, and as an auxiliary additive to improve the properties. For example, the composition of maltodextrin acts as one of the components of the carbohydrate chain.

    Disadvantages and benefits of maltodextrin

Except for the danger of use in patients with diabetes, maltodextrin is a safe dietary supplement. However, like any fast carb, it can cause fat deposits on your sides. If you use maltodextrin as part of a proven gainer and follow the recommendations for use, there will be no harm.

Molasses has a number of properties that are useful not only for manufacturers of sports nutrition. The benefits of maltodextrin lie in its conductive properties. Dextrimaltose helps to absorb potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, iron, and other nutrients.

Thus, maltodextrin is a relatively safe dietary supplement. When using molasses as part of a proven gainer and following the rules of reception, the substance does not carry any danger, while it has an indirect benefit, helping in the assimilation of useful macronutrients.
