Native to North America, the evening primrose is a small wildflower growing in a short growing season. When Europeans discovered that it has the ability to cure skin diseases and fresh wounds, quickly gave it the name "Royal cure for everything." Currently, Evening primrose is grown in more than 30 countries and the oil extracted from the seed is a source of linoleic acid. Evening primrose oil is not the only a source of DHA, but also the so-called gamma-linolenic acid (or GLA). This fatty acid, normally produced in the body from linoleic acid, has many important properties. It is converted in the body to eicosanoids, hormone-like substances, which include the prostaglandins. Prostaglandins help control such processes as inflammation, clots and cholesterol synthesis.
