Toning usually completes the cleansing step – facial toners improve the absorption of the active components in creams and serums. Facial toners restore the skin's acid-base balance (pH) after cleansing and prepare it for the application of skincare products.

Facial toners and why do you need one?

It is ideal to cleanse your face twice daily – in the morning and evening. By cleansing the skin, we remove corneocytes (keratinized cells) while disrupting its natural protective barrier, consisting of sebum, microflora, lactic acid, and sweat. This protective layer forms the basis of natural moisturizing factors (NMFs).

You can disrupt the skin's hydrolipid barrier if you ignore dermatological recommendations when washing your face: for example, use overly aggressive or incorrectly selected cleansing products, cleanse your face too frequently (more than 2 times a day), and wash your face in too hot or too cold water. A damaged protective barrier disrupts the skin's pH level, making it sensitive, dry, and irritated and causing itching, redness, and inflammation.

Using a facial toner will help normalize the skin's disrupted pH level. Many modern toners contain hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and aloe vera, which help retain moisture in the skin, leaving it softer and more hydrated.

Regular use of facial toners helps you achieve healthy, hydrated, even, and glowing skin. Remember to choose a toner that suits your skin type and individual needs.

How to choose the right facial toner for your skin type and needs? Facial toners picture

    • For dehydrated skin, consider a hydrating toner: Look for products with hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or aloe vera. These toners will help lock moisture into the skin.
    • A mattifying toner is suitable for oily or combination skin. It helps control excess sebum production, reducing skin shine. These toners may have salicylic acid or plant extracts in their composition.
    • If you have sensitive or irritated skin, choose a toner with soothing ingredients such as chamomile or cucumber extracts. It will help reduce redness and discomfort. These toners should not contain alcohol, fragrances, parabens, or dyes.
    • Toners with an anti-ageing effect are suitable for mature skin. Anti-ageing toners contain active ingredients such as peptides, hyaluronic and glycolic acids, and antioxidants (vitamins C and E, resveratrol) for preventing skin ageing. Brightening facial toners are also gaining popularity. They reduce pigmentation and even skin tone. Toners with vitamin C or alpha hydroxy acids are great for combating skin pigmentation.

To choose a toner for your skin type, determine what skin issues you want to address and look for a product that contains suitable ingredients.

    Facial toners for acne-prone skin

Skin prone to acne and inflammation requires special care and attention. Making toners for acne-prone skin an essential part of your regular skincare routine will help you renew and balance your skin. These toners are formulated to remove excess oil, makeup, and dirt that can lead to acne. They help deep clean pores and prevent pimples and blackheads.

Many toners for acne-prone skin contain components that help regulate sebum secretion (AHA and BHA acids, niacinamide (vitamin B3), and zinc). These ingredients are especially beneficial for people with oily skin since excess oil can cause skin problems.

When choosing a toner for acne-prone skin, pay attention to the product's ingredients. Look for ingredients like salicylic acid, glycerin, aloe vera, niacinamide, and plant extracts with antiseptic properties.

Toners for acne-prone skin will become your ally in achieving clear, healthy, and glowing skin. Use them regularly along with other skin care products for the best results.
