    Electrolytes

Electrolytes are ionic solutions (salts) that can be found in nature in the form of minerals. Electrolytes are essential to the body's hydration process, which is necessary for maintaining muscle and nerve function. Since the human body mainly consists of water, receiving a sufficient amount of these minerals is crucial.

    Why are electrolytes so important?

When the kidneys function normally, they regulate the concentration of electrolytes in the body fluid. In other circumstances, such as during intense workouts, the body loses a lot of liquid, including electrolytes. Urination, vomiting, diarrhea, and open wounds might cause a similar effect.

When we sweat, we lose sodium, potassium, and chloride. That is why athletes pay particular attention to consuming electrolytes after training.

After losing liquid, we should not only drink water but also replenish electrolytes. This way, the body will get hydrated quicker. Taking such electrolytes as sodium decreases fluid loss through urination and nourishes the muscles, nerves, and other tissues.

    Electrolytes deficiency

According to experts, if you are certain about your electrolyte deficiency, you must pay attention to such symptoms as fatigue, low blood pressure, and muscle cramps. However, these symptoms might vary depending on what mineral you are lacking.

Electrolyte deficiency causes an increase in blood viscosity and deterioration of gas exchange in cells, which has a negative effect on the functioning of muscles, brain, cardiovascular and respiratory systems. Besides, it deteriorates bone strength.

Electrolytes - When to take them?

Intense sweating during active sports, raised body temperature, diarrhea, and vomiting increase the body's need for electrolytes. The necessary dosages might significantly vary depending on the mineral and health condition.

Besides, strength exercises and strict diets might also increase the need for some minerals (for example, magnesium). That is why foods and preparations with magnesium are considered essential for athletes and bodybuilders. In this case, vitamin B6 is added to the complex since it increases magnesium absorption.
