Folic acid is a synthetic form of folate, a water-soluble vitamin also known as vitamin B9. This acid does not occur naturally in food products, but is often added to refined grain products such as bread and cereals, and is also part of vitamin and mineral food supplements.

Folic acid is necessary for the creation and maintenance of new cells, therefore its presence is especially important during periods when the body is rapidly developing – at the stage of early intrauterine development and in early childhood. B9 significantly reduces the likelihood of premature birth and the occurrence of congenital brain defects. Vitamin also prevents mood swings in the postpartum period and smoothes climatic disorders.
